The Story Behind the Image #3: Land of Plenty
Cornwall has always possessed a magnetic pull, but in recent years, that coastal charm has transformed certain pockets into absolute gold mines for luxury developers. Take Mawgan Porth Beach, for instance. It has become a massive focal point for some of the most affluent real estate buyers in the country. The local authority long ago gave up on providing affordable housing in this specific enclave, essentially letting the open market dictate its future.
Today, these clifftop properties fetch truly eye-watering amounts. It is a reality that keeps the fierce, ongoing debate surrounding second homes and local displacement alive and well - and those arguments will undoubtedly pervade until normal house prices are resumed. Though, if you are waiting for the market to cool down anytime soon, I wouldn't hold your breath. The property market in Mawgan Porth doesn’t follow National trends. It just goes up.
As a professional specialising in property photography and aerial videography, capturing these high-end architectural transformations is a fascinating part of the job. Real estate marketing at this elite level relies heavily on scale, prestige, and context. Wealthy buyers aren't just purchasing a home; they are investing in an exclusive coastal lifestyle. They want to see exactly how a property commands the rugged landscape, how it sits in relation to its neighbours, and just how dramatically it overlooks the Atlantic.
This particular drone photography shot was commissioned to showcase the relative positions of these premium properties perched along the cliff edge. Timing a coastal shoot is always a high-stakes balancing act between the tides, the weather, and the client's brief. For this frame, I specifically needed the tide to be all the way in to emphasise that immediate, dramatic connection to the water below. Also, the time of the day was crucial, later in the day meant the sun was directly on the cliffs.
From a creative standpoint, I initially would have preferred a much calmer sea to keep the composition clean and minimalist. However, nature rarely checks your mood board before you launch your kit.
Ultimately, the rougher Atlantic conditions worked to my advantage. The crashing waves and churning lines of white water created powerful, natural leading lines that beautifully draw the viewer's eye right through the surf and into the distance.
Navigating those unpredictable elements is all part of the job when you're shooting in the South West. If you’re planning a commercial project or a property photoshoot in Cornwall, Devon, or across the South East, I'm regularly on the road capturing these landscapes and luxury spaces. Drop me a line if you’d like to discuss a commission, whether it's right here on the coast or further afield.
