Why Authenticity Matters in Commercial Photography
Photography Not Possible With AI
I am told that I can get Artificial Intelligence to write my blogs but I prefer to do it myself as when AI does it it just doesn’t sound like me. Authenticity is a useful marketing tool. It is also one of the main values by which we are judged professionally. If I can’t be bothered to write my own marketing, maybe I can’t be bothered with your 2 hour job for a client that I won’t see again. Authenticity matters.
YGS Landscaping are a company with big ideas. They have taken on seven apprentices just this year. They already have an array of awards for past achievements and they currently are contracted to create new, and maintain, existing landscaping at Plymouth' s newest satellite town, Sherford.
I was asked to create a video of their work at Sherford for an award they have been nominated for. This was the first portrait format video (reel) I had ever made so it was an interesting video composition shift for me to make.
Luckily I have the Mavic 4 Pro which will shift the lenses to portrait format at the touch of a button. I used to shoot a lot of front covers for magazines and so the format was not alien to me, but I have a strange aversion to filming in portrait on my phone. I think it seems a bit amateurish. So I had to put that prejudice to bed and crack on.
I was then asked to attend a work discovery day at YGS’ Plymouth depot and amongst other shots get a picture of the entire work force with some of their plant. We wanted to exclude some of the containers and sheds on the site, so framing was critical. The Mavic 4 drone with its three lens set up was really useful. Using the 70mm lens I could foreshorten the depth between the staff and the plant, and crop out any unwanted bits. The long battery life allowed me to keep the drone in the air while we arranged the composition. Vans and people were moved whilst the drone kept position.
When so many people and vehicles are involved, there are no second chances to reshoot. I always have a back up drone in case there are any technical errors on the Mavic Pro 4. At Peter Cade Photography we monitor weather, wind, the flying territory, permissions and help compose the best shot in the circumstances. It is often then just experience that can be the difference between success and failure. A photograph was delivered to YGS Landscaping that would not be possible using Artificial Intelligence. Thank you Michelle Garner, Chief Marketing Executive at YGS for the work. Authenticity matters.
